God Has Mercy: Man Calls the Police

So I’m reading my daily dose of the WSJ, the best newspaper in the world when up pops a headline I can’t even believe. Banned from Church.

It seems that some conservative idiots masquerading as pastors are kicking people out of church for “sinning.” Apparently a woman in her 70s was arrested in Michigan for attending her Baptist church after she was banned. Get this: She was banned for “spreading dischord and gossiping about her Pastor.” Read “Disagreeing with her Pastor’s non-conformists attitude and idiotic decsions.”

Now as a true follower of Christ I totally get that we don’t get a pass on sin. The Bible is clear on the pricetag of sin – Death. And not that blissful, peaceful, fall off in your sleep death. An eternity of hell fire and damnation death.

But I also know that God – in his infinite mercy – gave us an escape clause. He’s called Jesus. And belief in him gets you to the pearly gates. But you still got to do right. Still, I guess I have a problem with a man with finite means doing something that only the infinite can do – ban you from God’s love.

I mean it’s kind of ridiculous. It’s so amazing that man is so willing to do something that even the all-knowning, omnipotent, infinite God of the universe doesn’t do. Man is quick to deny you your free will to choose – an abortion, gay marriage – whatever. Man will stick his gruffy little nose all up in yo’ business and point his bony little finger at all your faults with the quickness.

Yet, God has mercy. And what does man do? He calls the police.

  1. What an amazing article. Thank you for the link.

I love your last two paragraphs. If ever there was a nail head to be hit, you did it.

  2. But wait, wasn’t it Jesus who said,

“15 “Moreover if your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault between you and him alone. If he hears you, you have gained your brother. 16 But if he will not hear, take with you one or two more, that ‘by the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established.’ 17 And if he refuses to hear them, tell it to the church. But if he refuses even to hear the church, let him be to you like a heathen and a tax collector.” Matthew 18:15-17

And His chosen apostle who said,

“1 It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you, and such sexual immorality as is not even named among the Gentiles—that a man has his father’s wife! 2 And you are puffed up, and have not rather mourned, that he who has done this deed might be taken away from among you. 3 For I indeed, as absent in body but present in spirit, have already judged (as though I were present) him who has so done this deed. 4 In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, when you are gathered together, along with my spirit, with the power of our Lord Jesus Christ, 5 deliver such a one to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that his spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus.” 1 Corinthians 5:1-5
